Hello! My Name is Sven. How are you?

I do research

I am a Master Engineer at Ericsson living in the twilight between research, industrial grade prototypes and support for our business units. As in my previous jobs, it still is a constant battle between finding time for innovative ideas and providing practical solutions. My main area of expertise is management of networks and services, but I am now looking beyond that horizon to understand how to apply complex event processing, data mining and machine learning for Operation Support Systems (OSS), mainly in the wireless telecommunications world.

Currently, I am trying to understand the fundamentals of dynamic governance, which should help to build dynamic end-to-end (service) solutions. Previous work on federation, architectures and patterns really helps and the fun starts when the tool chain works.

When I find time, I write code

I am working on some development projects, some covering personal interests and some are for my research work. In 2010 I finally found the courage to open source some of my personal work.

I had used SourceForge earlier, but now moved to GitHub. Most repositories (repos) there are related to my SKB - which stands for Sven's Knowledge Base. Original a small PHP collection of function calls, the SKB evolved over a decade to a PHP framework (with Java port) that implements easy data handling mechanisms. The other repos are for implementing some patterns, a framework to build ANTLR parsers/compilers, a contract language and a policy language, amongst other things.

RFC's on April fool's day (1971-2010)

April 1st is coming soon, let's see what funny RFCs we see this year. Here is a list of RFCs publish...

I am not a Gardener...

...because I am having trouble to separate the useful and ornamental plants from weed. However, when we bought the house it was to a large extend for the garden (nice layout, lots of potentials to develop the lawn into a real garden) and that meant I became a trainee, again. First it was about helping to plan the garden, taking measurements and window-shop in every garden centre within a 1-day-driving-range. That was easy. Then came the digging, which turned out to be quite tough due to tons of stones. And then came the larger projects...

...a few years later, I have done a lot of things I never would have imagined seeing myself doing: construct and build raised garden beds (3 of them, 4.2m x 0.9m), a pond (roughly 3.2m by 2.0m and some 70cm deep in the middle), compost bins, a retaining wall (60cm high and 10m long) and of course decking (about 25m2). The projects planned for this year are 4 more raised beds (1m2 each), a timber cover for the retaining wall and a large triangular pergola.

  1. Digging holes in stony ground - partially painful
  2. Construction work - a long, long learning-curve
  3. Having lunch in August watching birds and dragonflies while eating home-grown peas, beans, artichokes, carrots, onions, potatoes, garlic, with strawberry and raspberry desert - priceless!

Other things I do like or like to do

reading (I’d love to commute by train again to get more time for books), swimming (two or three times a week, good for body and soul, try it!), travelling (a lot for work, but occassionally even on holidays), my model railway (yes, I know, I like it anyway...)

‘Every time I move arround,
I am loosing all of my friends
Every time I touch the ground
I find the strength - to get up again’
